We are the largest organization of the caregivers of the mentally ill
in Finland. We are dedicated to improving the lives of carers by providing
services to address the needs carers themselves identify.
With more than 20 years of experience, over 1400 members and a 12–person
staff, the organization provides a range of services for carers of people with
a mental illness. The services include:
Advice
The staff members of the association provide information and discuss
with the carers the support services that are available to the carers
and their mentally ill family member.
Carers’ Education
The family members play an important role in supporting people with a
mental illness. To help the carers’ in this task, 3-5 day educational
courses are organized. These courses aim to provide carers with the knowledge,
skills and confidence to deal more effectively with their role. In this
way, the well-being of both carers and their ill family member can be
improved.
Mutual Support Groups
The mutual support group provide the carers a valuable opportunity to
meet people in a similar situation. Carers can share experiences, coping
strategies, offer each other emotional support and develop enduring friendships.
These groups are run by voluntary peer leaders or by mental health professionals.
Respite services
A number of services (trips, vacations, visits to cultural activities)
are organized to enable carers to take a much needed break from their
demanding caregiving role
Publications
The association has produced a number of fact sheets and publications
that cover different types of issues that a carers of the mentally ill
is likely to face. The material is available in our office and also in
the home page of the association
